The game got an unpopular patch in the run-up to Diablo 4’s first season, released in July. That feels like an understatement—the community rebellion was strong enough to need an honest-to-Lilith emergency announcement in which the developers said, “We don’t plan on doing a patch like this again.”

Instead of repeating past mistakes Diablo 4 update, the Diablo team appears to be gradually correcting them. A hotfix has raised the experience gain for slaying monsters in World Tier 3 by 5% and by 15% in World Tier 4.

This helps to address the nerfs that enraged players—nerfs that reduced XP benefits for defeating higher level monsters (from 25% at three levels or higher to a pitiful 15% at about ten levels higher) with the World Tier bonuses they’re just now putting back on.

While this is theoretically wonderful news, it appears that many gamers would prefer that these mistakes never happen in the first place. In a post on the game’s subreddit, gamers saw the update as an overdue acknowledgment by the developers that they had messed up. “Classic Blizzard,” says user SQRTLURFACE in the top-rated remark. Reduce XP, then restore it, and call it a hotfix/patch.”

I’m not shocked that players aren’t feeling the love. That first patch slammed the community’s trust in the game, nerfing classes over the board (including the already-struggling Sorcerer) and slowing down the endgame grind. The most venomous-feeling change was an extra 2 seconds added to dungeon teleports, which felt petty at the time. I’m still not convinced how that modification enhanced the gameplay experience.

That isn’t to say there hasn’t been a real attempt to enhance the game, but there has been a lot of mucking around to get there. Diablo 4’s excessive amount of crowd control was toned down early this month, loot filters are coming soon, and opponent density was tweaked in August. It remains to be seen whether this is all too little, or too late.
